Choosing Gratitude When Life Isn't Going as Planned

Finding reasons to be thankful, even in the middle of life's disappointments

November is here, and everywhere we look, we're reminded to be thankful.

We're seeing gratitude challenges on social media, Thanksgiving decorations in the stores, and reminders to count our blessings.

And I love that!

But can we talk about something for a minute?

What happens when life doesn't feel like something to celebrate?

Maybe this year hasn't turned out the way you expected. Maybe you're dealing with family struggles, financial worries, health concerns, or prayers that still haven't been answered.

You know you have blessings to be thankful for, but some days, finding that grateful heart feels a little harder than usual.

If that's where you are right now, I want to encourage you.

You can be thankful and still be struggling.

Gratitude Doesn't Mean Everything Is Wonderful

Sometimes we think being grateful means we have to look on the bright side of everything.

But that's not what biblical gratitude is about.

We can appreciate the blessings God has given us while still acknowledging the things that hurt.

We can thank Him for His faithfulness while asking Him for help with something we're facing.

And we can have a grateful heart without pretending life is perfect.

I love the reminder in 1 Thessalonians 5:18:

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” —

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NASB)

Notice that we're encouraged to give thanks in everything, not necessarily for everything.

There's a difference.

We don't have to be thankful for the painful circumstances themselves. But even in those difficult moments, we can find reasons to thank God for His presence, His love, and His promises.

Sometimes Gratitude Starts Small

You know what I've learned?

Sometimes the smallest blessings are the ones that help us get through the hardest days.

A quiet morning with a cup of coffee.

A phone call from someone who cares.

A beautiful sunrise.

A few minutes to sit down, open our Bible, and simply breathe.

These things might not change our circumstances, but they remind us that goodness still exists in the middle of them.

And sometimes, that's exactly what our hearts need.

It's Okay to Have Mixed Feelings

Here's something I hope you'll remember this Thanksgiving season.

You don't have to choose between being grateful and being honest about how you feel.

You can miss someone and still enjoy the holiday.

You can feel disappointed about an unanswered prayer and still trust God.

You can be tired, overwhelmed, or uncertain about tomorrow and still recognize His blessings today.

Gratitude and difficult emotions can exist together.

God isn't asking us to hide our struggles behind a smile. He invites us to bring our whole hearts to Him.

And that includes the messy, complicated parts.

Finding Gratitude in God's Faithfulness

When life doesn't go as planned, it's easy to focus on everything that's missing or everything we wish were different.

But gratitude gently shifts our attention.

It reminds us of what God has already done, how He's carried us through difficult seasons, and the promises we can continue to hold onto.

Psalm 107:1 reminds us:

“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His mercy is everlasting.” — Psalm 107:1 (NASB)

Our circumstances may change, but God's goodness and mercy remain.

And that's something we can hold onto, even when life feels uncertain.

A Little Step of Faith

This week, try something simple.

At the end of each day, write down three things you're thankful for.

They don't have to be big or extraordinary.

Maybe it's a good conversation, a peaceful moment, or simply having the strength to make it through another day.

And if you're having a particularly difficult day, it's okay to start with just one.

The goal isn't to create a perfect gratitude list. It's to begin noticing God's goodness in your everyday life.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving me through every season of life, even the difficult ones. You know the disappointments, worries, and unanswered prayers I'm carrying. Help me recognize Your goodness without feeling like I have to pretend everything is okay. Open my eyes to the little blessings I sometimes overlook, and remind me that Your love and faithfulness never change. Give me a grateful heart, even when life doesn't go as planned.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Remember, friend, you don't have to have a perfect life to have a grateful heart.

Sometimes gratitude is simply whispering, "Thank You, Lord, for being with me today."

And that's enough to begin.

With love,

Kim
